Splashes Photographic Exhibition (by Tony Generico)
Tony Genérico is one of these persons for whom the verb, “to move,” sounds like music and challenges are actual doors to new discoveries. In the name of photography, he has been Holiday on Ice´s prop maker in the effervescent sixties, and a barman in New York, where he used to drink and eat photography from the hands of masters like Philippe Halsman, from whom he learned the art of portraiture, and was part also of the group that had put together the Soho Gallery in 1972.
Photographing liquid at the time of impact is a fascinating practice. At the exact instant in which impact occurs, the so called "splashes" move at a speed far beyond what the human eye can perceive. Consequently, it is only after the image has been frozen photographically, that one can examine their finest details. One will then find after close observation that each splash is completely unique. The uniqueness of the splash depends on the intensity of the impact, which generates the crown around the liquid. Therefore, intensity of both speed and impact make it very difficult for a photographer to produce two similar shots.
The challenge for the photographer lies within the techniques used to achieve the desired effect. One shot may be done simply by natural means, without retouching, like a strawberry thrown in a spoonful of milk. Another project, however, may require an extremely sophisticated approach as in “Brazilian Soccer”. In this case, a few shots were taken in view of the concept, ahead of the final digital work. NEW YORK: Through February 03 2008
Kara Walker won a MacArthur Award in 1997, and her art—for all its consistent comedy and fury—has seen radical formal experiment since then. Despite her epic history, this show will be the first attempt in the United States to mount a full-scale survey of her work. Arcing a loose narrative from antebellum antics to Hollywood nightmares, the exhibition—curated by Yasmil Raymond and Philippe Vergne—promises some one hundred installations, murals, videos, and works on paper made between 1993 and 2005. The catalogue brims with essays by Vergne and art historians Thomas McEvilley and Robert Storr, among others, as well as an “illustrated lexicon” of Walkeresque themes and a sixteen-page insert by the artist herself.

LONDON: HAYWARD GALLERY "The Painting of Modern Life" - Through December 30
In his debut show as the Hayward’s director, Ralph Rugoff eschews the small, quirky delights he is known for in favor of a broader brush. “The Painting of Modern Life” brings together approximately a hundred paintings that use photographs as their starting point—highlighting a prevalent strategy for picture making over the past forty-five years. The show kicks off with high-fidelity favorites such as Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter but also features younger artists such as Elizabeth Peyton and Wilhelm Sasnal, who evidence other, less faithful marriages of source and product. Photographic painting may be the target of much recent complaint, but it is not monolithic, as this show should make abundantly clear.

NEW YORK: SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
Through January 09 2008
Richard Prince has in recent years become one of the inescapable artists of our time—a fascinating development, given that for years his work seemed to appeal to only a coterie, whereas some of his Pictures peers quickly secured critical approbation and visibility. Prince now reigns as one of the most influential figures for young artists drawn to his cunning amalgams of grunge and glamour, conceptual spark and pop-cultural savvy. This retrospective includes some 175 of the artist’s works, among them his “Gangs” photographs, “Nurse” paintings, and “Hoods” sculptures. The catalogue includes essays by curator Nancy Spector and Jack Bankowsky and interviews by Glenn O’Brien with Phyllis Diller, Kim Gordon, and other cultural luminaries, who allegedly form a composite adumbration of Prince’s themes with regard to mass-cultural connoisseurship.

NEW YORK: Martin Puryear
November 4, 2007–January 14, 2008 At N.Y. MOMA
- The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Exhibition Gallery, sixth floor
- The Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium, second floor
The Museum of Modern Art presents a major exhibition of the sculpture of the acclaimed American artist Martin Puryear (b. 1941). The retrospective will feature approximately forty-five sculptures, following the development of Puryear's artistic career over the last thirty years, from his first solo museum show in 1977 to the present day. Puryear began his career in the 1970s alongside other members of the Post-Minimalist generation. Working primarily in wood, he has maintained an unwavering commitment to manual skill and traditional building methods. His sculptures are rich with psychological and intellectual references, examining issues of identity, culture, and history. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication illustrating all works in the exhibition, with additional reference illustrations of the artist's works and other comparative material. Ricardo Passos - Added new painting - The King

Ricardo Passos - Exhibition of a new theme: The King On The Belly. Painting, as in any other expression of art, goes far beyond what we can see, looking the canvas.
In this set of paintings, entitle “The king on the belly”, Ricardo Passos gives us a deer meaning that usual to the expression “ He thinks the world of himself”
Observing this canvas is impossible to not understand the main questions, the artist want to transmit. This set of works follow the previous ones, mention only the female universe: The pregnancy, the maternity, the responsibility of raising and educating, and above all, instructing someone who is going to have more responsibilities.
Are Queens more than only mothers or figures whose duty is bigger than simple adventure between mother and son?
Where does the desire of maternity and the beginning of procreation duty begin ?
Which were the roles for Queens and Crown Princes Whose birth was so desire as materialization of peace treaty ?
“The king on the belly”, it’s a pleasure to the sight, but also an element of reflection about additional royalty obligations. - October 29th.
