Dear artists,
Remember? Only ten weeks ago we informed you about ARTE ALGARVE. In the meantime these plans became reality. In a few days, ARTE ALGARVE will open its doors. The 3-day fair takes place from June 26th-28th from 2.30pm-8pm at EXPO ALGARVE in the Industrial Zone of Loulé next to the A22 motorway. The entrance costs 3 Euros.
There are 55 artists from various countries participating in what is Portugal´s biggest private art fair and the backbone of a new movement for art. For our members we also offer two new and very beautiful art galleries in Monchique and Loulé and soon in other places as well. We have also started the website www.artealgarve.net which will be the Algarve´s platform for art and culture. Our catalogue is published as a 48-pages supplement in the lifestyle magazine ESSENTIAL ALGARVE with a circulation of over 15000 copies. They came only a few days ago, and already they are sold out in many shops. Please hurry if you want to get it.
We will be very happy to meet you at the fair and hope that you too will become involved in this strong movement which has the main philosophy of bringing artists and art lovers into direct contact.
In the attachment you can find our virtual flyer. It would be nice if you could forward it to your friends, other artists and art lovers.
Best regards
Rolf Osang and the ARTE ALGARVE team

This forthcoming exhibition aims to bring the UK closer to current trends of Portuguese contemporary art. These five artists echo trends and styles from masters of the past but approach them in very individual and modern ways. These artists have brought contemporary art to the forefront of the Portuguese art world by pushing their ideas and methods to previously unexplored areas. All five have unique styles and techniques however their shared Portuguese heritage provides a common thread through their work. This common thread is what sets these artists apart form other modern artists as it provides a very unique and rich influence from which to work from. Bringing this exhibition to the UK will provide a window to the most current developments in contemporary art from artists that are making an impact on the movement itself. Outlined below are the five individual artists:
Francisco Urbano: “In the work of Francisco Urbano there is a curious and rich combination of elements. The synthesis of these is the ability to transform each work in a particular fantastic realism that is just amazing in itself.” – Oscar D'Ambrosio
Carla Taveira: “Her works have always attracted many people’s interest due the materials she uses within her pieces of artwork. Departing from established aesthetic forms, Carla Taveira uses unusual materials that immediately arouse the interest of the spectator. On closer inspection of the works one discovers that the layered textures are made up of such as gum, resin and recycled resources.”
José Rodrigues Figueira – Mayor of Vendas Novas City
José Cunha: “Researching the balance of forces is the key to understanding the work of Cunha who, by using diverse material and colours, tries to rebuild a lost order. He uses paper, card and plastic to reach a balance between chromaticism and volume and to experiment with shape, spaces and emptiness” – Gianni Nappa
Florentina Resende: “The artist has full conscience that to research and dominate the colour is much more than just an exercise. It is an act that leads to the knowledge of one self and, mainly, it unveils new paths by the juxtaposition of colours and the passages that they provide.” – Oscar D'Ambrosio
Maria Rafael: Under the immense black, before the opaque straightforwardness of nothing, one can see structures, columns which bear the opacity of dreams, the materiality of the blood and cartilages, chunks of earth and smashed branches, the oil of shy nudity, an architecture of earth and of dreams, a graphic progress and a geometry of chromatic and biological coordinates – we are, thus, before a vigorous and consequent recovery of what is hidden and discreet, of balance and containment, of an imperative silence and a cosmic whisper. - Jorge Velhote

Exhibition "Changing Feelings"
For this exhibition, Martha Carvalho presents 13 of her works, all of them produced in her studio in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Martha's brushstrokes, full of strength and lightness, give to her paintings a touch of softness where the sensibility of the artist is expressed in the harmonious colors. The contrast between the forms and the colors gives the tone of the artist’s search for harmony and emotional effusion.

O JARDIM
the breath of the city
We have the pleasure to announce a forthcoming exhibition of art, “O JARDIM”, showing the recent paintings, photographs and drawings of European artists; Rebecca Rason Flor Ferreira, Heather Taylor, Bartha de Kok and Richard Hartnoll.
“O Jardim” is inspired by the Botanical garden of Lisbon, Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Lisboa. The exhibition presents the artists´ individual experiences of working in the Garden and collectively communicates their appreciation of light, line, texture and mood.
The paintings and photographs highlight the beauty of this hidden terra and the fascination of nature thriving in a unique micro-climate, surrounded by the man-made hub of a capital city.
The work has lead to a deeper understanding of the importance of this Botanical Garden to Lisbon . It is of notable historical value and has serious significance environmentally and offers an important contribution to science and education. The focus of "O Jardim" can therefore be seen in relation to the current and very real concerns of global climate change and the constant threat of development to green urban spaces.
This year the Botanical Garden celebrates its inauguration and has been providing many benefits to local residents and visitors for the last 130 years. The Garden continues in the conservation of plant species, many ancient and rare, which flourish within its boundaries, but it is limitless in its power to inspire. "
Opening on the 7th May 2008, 18.00-23.00, in the Sala do Veado, Science and Natural History Museum , Lisbon.
The exhibition runs until the 31st May. Tues-Fri 10.00-17.00, Sat-Sun 11.00-18.00.
